Kansas Optimist Model Legislature
The Kansas Optimist Model Legislature is an activity sponsored by the Octagon Club that allows club members to experience the procedures of making laws in Kansas. On the Sunday and Monday just before Thanksgiving, High School students from school districts across Kansas assemble in Topeka to create a model of the Legislative and Judicial branches of government. Participants sponsor a Bill and are assigned to be Representatives or Senators. Committees are formed to discuss and vote on proposed legislation. The Senate and House then convene to consider bills that survived the committee vote. Participants may also choose to run for judicial office or Governor.
